Cardiff University is offering a fully funded PhD position in Energy Systems Modelling, supervised by Professor Meysam Qadrdan. The research focuses on the modelling and analysis of integrated energy systems, including electricity, gas, and hydrogen networks. The project will investigate the impact of emerging low-carbon technologies such as heat pumps and the growing energy demands from data centres on these interconnected systems.

The successful candidate will develop advanced models of integrated energy systems and apply state-of-the-art AI and machine learning techniques, primarily using Python, to analyse system behaviour, identify risks and opportunities, and support decision-making. The research is highly applied, with outputs intended to inform network companies, regulators, and government bodies, shaping future investment and energy strategies.

This PhD sits at the intersection of engineering, data science, and energy policy, providing excellent training and career prospects in academia, industry, consultancy, and government. Applicants should have a first-class undergraduate degree or a strong MSc in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, integrated engineering, or a closely related discipline. A solid programming background and an interest in data-driven methods are essential. The position is open to UK applicants only due to funding limitations.

The studentship is for 3.5 years, covering home tuition fees and providing a UKRI PhD stipend of approximately £21,000 per year (tax-free). There are also opportunities for additional paid work as a part-time research assistant.
