About this position

PhD opportunity at the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) in Barcelona, Spain, focused on the environmental science, chemistry, biology, and public health dimensions of compostable bioplastics.

The project develops an integrative multi-level framework combining Effect-Directed Analysis (EDA), High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS), and New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) to assess risks from compostable bioplastic materials. The successful candidate will study complex chemical mixtures and transformation products generated during composting and environmental exposure, and how they interact with biological systems from in vitro human and fish cell models to soil-plant mesocosms.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology, Biology, or a related field. Experience in LC-MS/HRMS, in vitro cell-based bioassays, ecotoxicology, data analysis, statistics/R programming, and scientific writing is advantageous. Excellent English is essential.

This is a 4-year FPI predoctoral contract with salary aligned to the FPI predoctoral scheme. The application deadline is 30 September 2026, and the target start date is November 2026.

To apply, email your CV and motivation letter to Victoria Osorio and Cinta Porte with the subject line “PhD position for RISK-BIOCOMP”.
