PhD Position in Forensic Genetics and Human Microbiome at University of Zurich University of Zurich in Switzerland

The Forensic Genetics Department at the University of Zurich, led by Dr. Natasha Arora, is seeking a motivated PhD student to join their research team. The position focuses on exploring the human microbiome and human DNA/RNA markers for forensic and clinical applications. The research will primarily involve microbiome-based analyses with an emphasis on forensic applications such as body fluid/tissue identification, individual identification, and geo-location. There is also the opportunity to integrate complementary human mRNA and DNA methylation markers into the research.

The project aims to translate findings to clinical and anthropological contexts, contributing to the understanding of microbial signatures related to health and human evolution. The successful candidate will collaborate with other departments and benefit from a supportive, inclusive research environment. Applicants should have a background in molecular biology, population genetics, microbiology, computational biology, or biostatistics, with experience in next-generation sequencing data analysis preferred. Strong skills in R and/or Python and statistics are important, as are scientific writing and communication skills in English. Knowledge of German or willingness to learn is preferred.
