About this position

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is advertising a fully funded PhD position in Social Data Science within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities in Amsterdam. The project is part of the Vidi project “The economy of digital influence operations”, led by Associate Professor Jon Roozenbeek, and focuses on the market infrastructure behind disinformation and influence operations in digital environments.

The PhD research will examine the online manipulation economy, including fake accounts, engagement services, and bot armies sold online. The successful candidate will map buyers and sellers in this marketplace, conduct interviews with key actors, and build bespoke analysis pipelines using social media data and financial data to study downstream consequences. The project is closely connected to the Influence and Technology Lab, which is based between Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Cambridge.

Supervision will be provided by Jon Roozenbeek and Associate Professor Ivar Vermeulen. The position is advertised via VU Amsterdam, and the successful candidate will work primarily in Amsterdam, with close links to Cambridge. The role includes a cumulative dissertation, empirical studies, publication output, and public-facing research outputs such as the Cambridge Online Trust and Safety Index.

Applicants should hold a completed research master’s degree in Social Data Science, Communication Science, Psychology, or Economics. Strong quantitative research skills are required, including advanced statistical analysis and time series analysis. Experience with Python and R is essential, and excellent academic writing in English is expected. Knowledge of Russian and/or Mandarin is considered an advantage. The department also values independence, collaboration, and clear communication.

The position is four years and fully funded, with a salary starting at €3,204 gross per month and rising to €4,051 gross per month in the fourth year. The initial contract is for one year and is extended after satisfactory evaluation. The application deadline is 14 September 2026, and interviews are expected between 21–30 September. Preferred starting date is 4 January 2027.
