About this position
PhD position in heart regeneration at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.
The project is hosted in the Eroglu Lab in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology. The research focuses on the molecular and cellular basis of heart regeneration in salamanders, combining molecular biology, advanced imaging, loss- and gain-of-function experiments, live imaging, and translational work using human iPSC-derived cardiac cells. The central aim is to uncover the role of salamander-specific genes in regeneration and to identify genes with no known mammalian orthologues.
This is a doctoral studentship (PhD placement) with a contractual salary, full-time appointment, and employment for up to 4 years. The position is suitable for candidates interested in cardiovascular biology, vertebrate regeneration, cell and molecular biology, and imaging-based experimental research.
Eligibility requirements include a master’s degree in biomedical sciences or a similar field, or equivalent doctoral eligibility under Swedish rules. Applicants must also demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to English B/English 6. The department seeks a highly motivated candidate with strong teamwork, independence, and an organized working style. Experience with aquatic animals and small animal surgery is advantageous. Prior work with intravital imaging, confocal imaging, and advanced image analysis (deconvolution, motion correction, cell tracking) is meriting. Previous research experience in a multidisciplinary international cardiovascular biology environment is also desirable.
How to apply: submit the application through the Varbi recruitment system. Include a personal letter, CV, degree projects, previous publications if any, other evidence of relevant skills, and documents proving general and specific eligibility. Applications may be submitted in English or Swedish. Deadline: 12 November 2026.
