About this position
The University of Twente in the Netherlands is offering several fully funded PhD positions in Micro-Robotics within the Surgical Robotics Laboratory, Department of Biomechanical Engineering (Faculty of Engineering Technology). The research focuses on the development of surgical micro-robotic devices for minimally invasive medical applications, emphasizing micro- and nano-fabrication, optical technologies for sensing and actuation, and advanced control strategies. Projects involve the design, fabrication, and experimental validation of micro-scale robotic platforms, integration of photonic sensing, and operation in complex biological environments. Collaboration with the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology and clinical/international partners is a key aspect.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in applied physics, nanotechnology, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related field. Strong background in micro-scale systems or robotics is required, with experience in optical sensing, photonics, micro- and nano-fabrication, modeling and control of micro-robotic systems, or integration of miniaturized sensing and actuation systems. Experience combining optical technologies with micro-fabrication or robotics is advantageous.
The position offers a 4-year contract with a starting salary of €3,059 gross per month, rising to €3,881 in the fourth year, plus holiday and year-end bonuses, pension scheme, and at least 29 holidays per year. The University of Twente provides a dynamic, international research environment with excellent facilities and professional development opportunities through Graduate School Twente.
To apply, candidates should submit their CV, motivation letter, and/or list of publications, as well as the title and abstract of their Master’s thesis, via the University of Twente’s online application portal. The application deadline is 31 March 2026. For substantive questions, contact Prof. Sarthak Misra at [email protected]. The selection process includes interviews and may require a presentation.
