About this position

University of Twente is offering a PhD Position in Micro-Robotics within the Surgical Robotics Laboratory and the Department of Biomechanical Engineering, in collaboration with the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology and clinical and international partners. The project addresses a major challenge in minimally invasive interventions: developing micro-robotic tools that can sense, act, and manipulate at sub-millimetre scales inside confined anatomical environments.

The research focuses on the design, fabrication, and experimental validation of micro-scale robotic platforms, with particular emphasis on micro- and nano-fabrication, optical technologies, and scalable integration of photonic sensing or actuation. The successful candidate will work on integrating optical and imaging-based feedback, and on developing modeling and control strategies for operation in complex biological environments. This is a highly interdisciplinary project spanning robotics, applied physics, biomedical engineering, photonics, MEMS, and micro-assembly.

The position is based at the University of Twente in Enschede, The Netherlands, within a strong international research environment with excellent facilities. The project offers a full-time 4-year PhD appointment, professional and personal development through Graduate School Twente, and a competitive salary and benefits package. The advertised salary starts at €3204 gross per month in the first year and rises to €4051 gross per month in the fourth year, complemented by an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, pension scheme, and at least 29 holidays per year for full-time employment.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in applied physics, nanotechnology, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline. A strong background in micro-scale systems or robotics is expected, and experience with optical sensing, photonics, light-based micro-scale actuation, micro- and nano-fabrication, or modeling and control of robotic systems is especially relevant. The university notes that experience combining optical technologies with micro-fabrication or robotics is an advantage.

To apply, candidates must submit their CV, including contact information for at least two academic references, and the title and abstract of their Master’s project or thesis. Applications close on 30 September 2026 at 23:59 Europe/Amsterdam time. For more information, interested applicants can contact Prof. Sarthak Misra via [email protected].
