About this position

PhD position in molecular reproductive physiology of catfish at Auburn University, in the School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences (SFAAS). The project is based at the E.W. Shell Fisheries Center in Auburn, Alabama, with additional research at universities and research facilities in the Midwestern United States.

The student will join Ian A.E. Butts’ Reproductive Physiology Lab and work on hybrid catfish production, sperm quality, gamete quality biomarkers, reproductive performance, and multi-omics approaches. Research topics include predicting and improving sperm quality for in vitro fertilization, developing biomarkers, understanding blue catfish reproductive physiology, and improving reproductive performance in hybrid catfish.

This is a research-intensive PhD with approximately 75% laboratory research and 25% pond-based research. The student will gain hands-on experience with biochemical, endocrine, molecular biology, cellular, and functional omics techniques relevant to aquaculture and fisheries science.

Funding includes a $30,000 annual salary plus fringe benefits for four years, and a tuition waiver is typically provided. The position starts in May 2027 or earlier, with coursework and research beginning in May 2027.

Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree in biology, aquaculture, fisheries, or a closely related field; interest in aquaculture, molecular physiology, and reproductive biology; laboratory experience in molecular biology and/or physiology; bioinformatics experience and fish husbandry experience are assets; strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills; and the ability to obtain a U.S. driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
