About this position

Karolinska Institutet is advertising a PhD position in Neuroscience in Marie Carlén's research group at the Department of Neuroscience, Campus Solna, Sweden. The project uses a systems neuroscience approach to study the biological basis of cognition and information processing in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), with additional focus on PFC-striatum interactions.

The doctoral project includes electrophysiology, optogenetics, Neuropixels recordings, viral vectors, transgenic mice, behavioral testing under head-fixation, analysis of single-neuron and LFP activity, and computational methods for anatomical annotation and brain-circuit visualization. The work is strongly oriented toward mouse neuroscience, brain circuits, and cognitive neuroscience.

Eligibility highlights: a master's degree in neuroscience or equivalent advanced-level qualification; certified English proficiency equivalent to English B/English 6; practical experimental neuroscience experience with neuronal activity in mice; and certification for animal work under Swedish and/or European legislation. Preferred experience includes in vivo electrophysiology, surgical procedures, intracranial injections, viral tracing, mouse behavior, programming, and advanced data analysis.

Funding: the position is a full-time doctoral employment for up to 4 years, with salary according to Karolinska Institutet's doctoral salary scale.

How to apply: submit the application in the Varbi recruitment system. Include a CV, motivation letter, theses/publications, supporting documents for skills and eligibility, and proof of both general and specific doctoral eligibility. The application deadline is 2026-08-26.
