About this position
The Department of Interface Science at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin-Dahlem offers a PhD position in the Carbon capture group led by Dr. Valentin Briega Martos, within a department headed by Prof. Beatriz Roldan Cuenya.
The project focuses on the operando characterization of electrochemical carbon capture processes. The successful PhD student will investigate how CO2 capture adducts are reduced in capture liquids and how the catalysts used in these reactions dynamically reconstruct under operating conditions. The research aims to clarify the mechanisms behind electrochemical carbon capture and to support the design of improved electrocatalysts and electrochemical processes for carbon management.
The work combines in situ and operando experimentation with benchtop electrochemical cells and electrolyzers. The project uses spectroscopy and mass spectrometry to identify and quantify intermediates and products, along with surface characterization and online dissolution methods to follow changes in catalyst surface structure and morphology during reaction. The position sits in a research environment that combines advanced synthesis, experimental characterization, and data analysis, with access to world-class facilities in Germany and Europe.
The institute emphasizes internationally oriented research, laboratory-based infrastructure, and training opportunities in cutting-edge experimental and data analysis methods.
