About this position
Charles University, Faculty of Science, Prague, is offering a fully funded PhD position in Organic Chemistry focused on the development of new enantioselective reactions using N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). The project aims to advance asymmetric catalysis, a key strategy for synthesizing optically pure compounds relevant to agrochemical, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. The research will build on recent progress in catalytic systems, targeting new carbon–carbon and carbon–heteroatom bond-forming reactions for diverse (hetero)cyclic molecules, including biologically and structurally interesting compounds.
The successful candidate will join the Group of Asymmetric Synthesis, led by Prof. Jan Veselý, and work closely with Dr. Vojtěch Dočekal. The group offers a collaborative and friendly research environment, with opportunities to train in state-of-the-art organic methods and techniques. The position is fully funded for four years, with support sufficient to cover living costs in Prague. The project involves both experimental and computational aspects, and the group collaborates with material, computational, and synthetic chemists.
Applicants should have an M.Sc. in organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, or a related field, with experience in synthesis and characterization of small molecules. Strong interest in organic synthesis and catalysis, willingness to learn new techniques, teamwork skills, and good English proficiency are required. The position is open for a September/October 2026 start, and does not include a 2-month paid internship as part of the selection process.
To apply, candidates should send their CV to Dr. Vojtěch Dočekal ([email protected]) by 15th January 2026. For more information, applicants can review the research group’s academic page and recent publications. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in advanced organic synthesis, asymmetric catalysis, and NHC chemistry at a leading European institution.
