About this position
Malmö University is advertising a PhD position in biomedical science within the Faculty of Health and Society, focused on pharmaceutical science, drug delivery, and biophysical characterisation of biopharmaceutical products for inhalation therapy.
The project, BioInhale, studies how drug molecules and macromolecules interact with the lung epithelium during aerosolisation, deposition, dissolution, permeation, retention, and clearance. The work sits at the intersection of pharmacy, biopharmaceutics, aerosol science, biophysics, and drug development.
The doctoral student will work in an interdisciplinary environment at the Department of Biomedical Science and within the Biofilms Research Center for Biointerfaces (BRCB). The project is carried out in collaboration with Swedish and international industrial partners, including Emmace Consulting, Bioneer, MatTek, Inhalation Sciences, Truly Labs, and Magle ChemoSwed, with advice from AstraZeneca.
Research tasks include developing and characterising inhalation formulations for small molecules and biological drugs, studying aerosol generation and deposition in the airways, investigating drug dissolution, permeation, retention and clearance in the lung, and analysing/modelling data to understand how regional lung differences affect drug distribution and pharmacokinetics.
Eligibility requires a relevant second-cycle qualification and specific credits in biomedical science or a related field, plus good English. Helpful experience includes bioanalytical methods, chromatography, mass spectrometry, drug release/permeation experiments, X-ray scattering, FTIR, confocal microscopy, impedance spectroscopy, statistical analysis, and mathematical modelling.
The position is full-time and fixed-term for four years. It is funded through the Knowledge Foundation via the BioInhale project. Application deadline: 2026-09-14. Start date is 1 November 2026, or by agreement, no later than 1 December 2026.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
