About this position

The Rhine AI research group, led by Prof. I. Bogunovic in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Basel, is offering a PhD opportunity in the post-training of diffusion-based large language models (dLLMs).

The SNSF-funded project, “Foundations of Post-Training for Reasoning in Diffusion Large Language Models,” investigates how post-training can improve the reasoning capabilities of dLLMs. These models represent an emerging alternative to standard autoregressive large language models and offer new opportunities for developing reasoning-aware AI systems.

The doctoral researcher will develop reinforcement learning methods for post-training large dLLMs, investigate generation strategies such as adaptive unmasking and credit assignment, and help create benchmarks for evaluating reasoning across domains, including mathematical problem solving. The work combines machine learning, artificial intelligence, generative modeling, and principled analysis with large-scale experimentation using modern AI systems.

The researcher will conduct research, write papers, present results at leading international conferences such as ICML, NeurIPS, and ICLR, and collaborate with national and international experts. The position provides close supervision and mentoring within Rhine AI, with access to collaborators at institutions including EPFL and ETH.
