About this position

Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH is seeking a doctoral researcher for a PhD project in quantitative modelling of tissue growth at the Institute for Advanced Simulation – Theoretical Physics of Living Matter (IAS-2) in Jülich, Germany.

The interdisciplinary project combines theoretical biophysics, tissue mechanics, computational biology, membrane-potential-regulated growth, high-performance computing, and experimental data analysis. Building on collaborative work with Harvard Medical School, the researcher will extend a model of mechanical feedback on cell growth into three dimensions and investigate how mutations, cell competition, tissue height, tissue-sheet growth, and deformations emerge.

Responsibilities include further developing a performant simulation framework for high-performance computing, studying competition between different cell types, deriving simplified analytical models, and analysing experimental data from collaborators. A visit to Harvard Medical School may be possible.

Applicants should hold a master's degree or diploma in physics, biology, biochemistry, informatics, or a related field. Strong English communication skills at CEFR B2 or higher, programming knowledge in Python and C++, and motivation for interdisciplinary research are required. Experience in simulation sciences or tissue-growth modelling is beneficial but not essential.

The three-year position is available from the next possible date and is paid at 75% of pay group 13 under the TVöD-Bund agreement. The vacancy remains open until filled. Applications should be submitted online, citing index number 2026D-0860.

Funding details

The position is a salaried, fixed-term doctoral position for three years at pay group 13, 75% of the TVöD-Bund scale, depending on qualifications and assigned responsibilities. Benefits also include 30 days of annual leave, access to research infrastructure, professional development, conferences, flexible working arrangements, and company health management.

What's required

Applicants should have a master's degree or diploma in physics, biology, biochemistry, informatics, or another relevant discipline. Strong motivation for an interdisciplinary project combining physics, biology, simulation, and data science is required. Applicants need very good written and spoken English, at least B2 level according to the CEFR, ideally supported by a certificate. German is not mandatory but is advantageous. Independence and commitment, and good knowledge of Python and C++, are expected. Experience in simulation sciences or tissue-growth modelling is advantageous but not mandatory. Relevant coursework and good grades in theoretical biophysics, computational methods, Python, object-oriented programming, C++, OpenMP, fluid dynamics, and cell biology may be considered.
