About this position
PhD Position: The Rule of Law from Below at the University of Amsterdam (Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Department of Sociology / AISSR) invites applications for a PhD project on rule of law, urban rights, human rights, social justice, and socio-legal research in Amsterdam.
The project examines how urban residents, community-based groups, and social movements seek justice, equality, inclusion, and access to services in everyday interactions with municipal authorities and frontline service providers. It uses qualitative methods such as participant observation, in-depth interviews, ethnographic research, and potentially participatory methods. The topic is embedded in the Political Sociology programme group and connected to the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), the Centre for Urban Studies, and the Urban Impact Lab.

Eligibility highlights: a university master’s degree in the social sciences or human rights; Dutch language proficiency for fieldwork in Amsterdam; substantial qualitative research experience, preferably socio-legal; and interest or experience in human rights and social justice. The project especially welcomes applicants interested in vulnerable and/or marginalized populations such as homeless people, survivors of family violence, welfare recipients, and racialised minorities.
Funding and terms: This is a paid PhD employment contract for 38 hours per week, up to four years total, starting with one year and extendable by three years after positive assessment. Salary ranges from €3,059 to €3,881 gross per month, plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, and other benefits. Teaching is about 10% of the appointment.
