About this position

The University of Freiburg is offering a PhD position in the project "Stand Density Management for Forest Adaptation to Drought" within the Excellence Cluster Future Forests. This interdisciplinary research center focuses on the adaptation and transformation of forests and their societal use in the face of global change, with a strong emphasis on forest ecology, silviculture, and environmental science. The doctoral project aims to clarify the mechanisms by which stand density management can reduce drought-related tree stress and mortality in broadleaf and conifer forests. Research will involve assessing tree stress and mortality, relating these to stand density, tree height, age, crown dimensions, site conditions, and past silvicultural treatments, and linking these assessments with high-resolution forest structure and microclimate data. The project will provide guidance for future forest management under novel drought conditions.

The Excellence Cluster Future Forests brings together over 50 researchers from four faculties and non-university partners, supported by the German Research Foundation. The cluster is dedicated to understanding the complex interactions between forests and society, aiming to develop adaptive and sustainable transformation pathways for forest-based social-ecological systems. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, with opportunities for collaboration, professional development, and international networking.

Applicants should hold a master's degree in forest sciences, environmental sciences, biology, or related fields, and have enthusiasm or experience in studying climate impacts on forests and silvicultural adaptation. Skills in field and lab work, data handling, and statistics (preferably R) are required. Experience in dendroecology and remote sensing is advantageous. Proficiency in English is required; German is an asset. The position is part-time (75%), funded for 3.5 years, with salary according to TV-L 13, and includes a personal budget for research and career development.
