About this position

The University of Basel's Faculty of Business and Economics is offering a joint PhD position in sustainable real estate and buildings-sector decarbonization, supervised by Prof. Aya Kachi (International Political Economy and Energy Policy) and Prof. Pascal Gantenbein (Financial Management). This interdisciplinary opportunity focuses on empirical research into emissions, policy, and financial dynamics within the buildings and construction sector, with a strong emphasis on macro-level data and policy relevance across countries.

The successful candidate will develop an original research agenda, exploring topics such as sectoral emissions trajectories, the effectiveness of building-related policies, and the influence of financial conditions on decarbonization outcomes. The position is designed to generate concrete empirical insights at the intersection of real estate economics, political economy, and sustainable finance, using rigorous data analysis methods.

Key responsibilities include conducting empirical research on buildings-sector emissions, policy, and finance; performing data analysis using R and/or Python; writing research papers; presenting results at international conferences; interacting with industry partners and public administration; and supporting teaching activities, including the CAS Sustainable Real Estate continuing education program and undergraduate courses.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree in economics, political science (quantitative), finance (empirical), public policy, or a related quantitative social science field. Essential qualifications include a strong academic record, solid training in quantitative methods, proficiency in R and/or Python, experience with empirical datasets, and excellent communication skills in English. Candidates should demonstrate analytical thinking, independent research ability, interest in sustainability transitions, and the capacity to work both independently and in interdisciplinary teams.

The position is based in Basel, Switzerland, with a flexible start date around November 2026. The initial contract is for one year, typically extended for three additional years upon successful proposal defense. The University offers close supervision in an interdisciplinary environment, funding for conference attendance, competitive salary, and excellent working conditions.

To apply, submit a single PDF file via the University's e-recruitment system containing a motivation statement, CV, transcripts, at least two reference letters, and a master's thesis or another writing sample in English. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. For questions about the position, contact Prof. Kachi at [email protected].

This PhD position provides a unique opportunity to contribute to sustainability transitions in the built environment, combining policy, finance, and empirical research in a collaborative academic setting at the University of Basel.
