About this position
Ghent University invites applications for a PhD position focused on the reaction kinetics of lignin depolymerization. The research aims to elucidate the kinetics and mechanisms of ultra-fast, non-catalytic lignin depolymerization processes, with the goal of developing a comprehensive kinetic model to optimize product selectivity and process performance. Unlike conventional approaches, this project investigates a novel strategy operating on extremely short time scales without catalysts, leading to unique reaction pathways and product distributions.
The successful candidate will design and conduct kinetic experiments under controlled conditions, quantify reaction rates and product formation, and develop a validated kinetic model. The research will support the optimization of reaction conditions and contribute to a mechanistic understanding of lignin depolymerization. Results will be disseminated through scientific publications and conference presentations.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering Technology, or a closely related field. A strong interest in chemical reaction kinetics and mechanisms, especially in complex systems, is essential. Candidates should have experience or a clear interest in experimental research, including kinetic experiments, data analysis, continuous flow reactor operation, and analytical techniques such as GPC, GC, and NMR. Experience with kinetic modeling and parameter estimation is advantageous, and familiarity with modeling or data-analysis tools (MATLAB, Python, Aspen, gPROMS) is a plus. An affinity for bio-based, circular, or sustainable chemistry is desirable. Excellent command of English, both written and spoken, is required.
The position offers a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 4 years, remuneration according to salary scale WM1, and a range of staff benefits including training opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. Ghent University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity, encouraging all qualified candidates to apply.
To apply, submit your application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline. Required documents include your CV and academic transcript (merged PDF), cover letter (PDF), diploma transcript, and, if applicable, a translation. Also include a reference letter and an overview of your study results. Applications sent by email will not be accepted.
