About this position

PhD opportunity at Grenoble INP - Institute of Engineering in Grenoble, France, within the SYMMES-associated NextHyBat project on next-generation all-solid-state electrolytes for lithium batteries.

The doctoral contract is part of a wider collaborative effort supported by UGA’s Labex Materialps. The project investigates how chemistry, structure, functional properties, and durability are connected in innovative solid electrolytes designed for advanced lithium battery applications.

The research is highly interdisciplinary and combines the expertise of several laboratories in Grenoble together with CEA-Liten. Materials will be synthesized at SyMMES, while morphological studies will be conducted by CERMAV using direct-domain techniques such as AFM, SEM, and TEM, and by SyMMES using reciprocal-domain methods such as SAXS and SANS. Electrical performance will be evaluated with G2Elab and CEA Liten through dielectric analysis and studies of electrical conduction across the glassy-to-viscous regime. Photo-induced force microscopy (PiFM) will also be used to obtain local chemical information on the phases within the electrolytes and their interactions at interfaces and interphases.

The goal is to adjust electrolyte chemistry to optimize electrochemical performance and long-term durability, with analyses performed both in the initial state and after cycling in a button cell.

Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree in Materials Science, Polymer Science, or Electrochemistry, plus strong skills in data analysis, Excel and Python-based processing, spectroscopic analysis (IR, UV–Vis, Raman), and familiarity with electron microscopy. Applicants should be able to prepare reports in French and English, conduct literature reviews, and work fluently in English. The position also values rigor, teamwork, proactivity, and scientific integrity.
