About this position
Multiple PhD positions are available at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany, hosted by the new Institute for Advanced Membrane Technology (IAMT) in Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen.
This project focuses on novel nanofiltration membranes for contaminant removal, building on ongoing research in nanofiltration for pollutant elimination. The research aims to improve removal and selectivity for a wide range of contaminants, including steroid hormone micropollutants, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and fluorinated organic compounds.
The PhD will be largely experimental, with some modelling. Key topics include development and operation of membrane filtration systems, investigation of physical and chemical processes inside membrane pores, evaluation of membrane characteristics and selection criteria, and design of membranes capable of achieving complete removal. The project also addresses important research questions about removal mechanisms, verification of micropollutant removal, and the membrane features needed to overcome limiting factors.
The project is expected to begin with a detailed literature survey and formulation of research questions, followed by a four-year research plan. Students will conduct experiments, analyse samples and data, and write results for scientific publication. There are opportunities to work with internal and external partners, supervise Master’s students, present at conferences, publish in high-impact journals, and gain some teaching experience.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Chemical, Process, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field. Prior experience with membrane filtration systems is advantageous. Strong experimental problem-solving skills and good common sense are valued, as are excellent English skills; basic German is a plus. A valid driver’s licence is required.
Applications should include a CV, publication list and contribution details where relevant, academic transcripts, degree certificates, contact details for three references, and a full research proposal. The deadline is 2026-12-31, and the post indicates that multiple positions are available.

What's required
A Master's degree in Chemical, Process, Environmental Engineering, or equivalent is required. The candidate should be naturally curious, eager to learn, and strongly interested in research. Experience with membrane filtration systems of any scale is a definite advantage, along with the ability to specify system components and strong experimental problem-solving skills. Excellent English language proficiency is essential, and basic German language skills are an advantage. A valid driver’s licence is required.
How to apply
