About this position

This PhD project at Politecnico di Torino focuses on using advanced AI to improve how industrial catalytic systems are explored and optimized. The work addresses a key challenge in sustainable chemical and energy production: traditional experimentation is often slow and costly when many variables and competing objectives must be considered at once.

The candidate will develop and apply Sequential Learning and agent-based methods to guide experimentation in complex design spaces. The aim is to accelerate experimental discovery and contribute to the methodological foundations of self-driving laboratories, where automation and intelligent decision-making support faster and more adaptive research workflows.

The research is embedded in the Energy Department at Politecnico di Torino and is carried out in collaboration with Shell Global Solutions International B.V. Industrially relevant case studies will be defined for the project, and research stays at Shell’s Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam (ETCA) are foreseen, offering an academic-industrial environment with direct relevance to energy-transition challenges.
