About this position
This PhD project focuses on radar remote sensing for detecting logging in tropical forests, with the broader aim of supporting tools that help curb illegal timber trade. The successful candidate will work on a research project developing independent techniques to verify timber origin under new international legislation.
You will process and analyse novel satellite radar data and develop remote-sensing methods to identify logging occurrence and logging intensity across pantropical forests. The project’s outputs will contribute to a publicly accessible dashboard for validating claimed timber origin, linking remote sensing research directly to a practical verification tool for authorities, the timber industry, and NGOs.
The position is embedded in the Forest Ecology and Forest Management group and the Laboratory of Geo-Information Science and Remote Sensing at Wageningen University & Research. You will be part of the Timtrace team, which includes two PhD candidates, a postdoc, and the supervisors. The project also involves international partners in Central Africa, South-East Asia, and South and North America, creating an international and interdisciplinary research environment.
Supervision is provided by prof. dr. Pieter Zuidema and dr. Johannes Reiche. The role includes collaborative work with project partners and members of the user committee, as well as contributing data and results to the timber verification dashboard. No fieldwork is foreseen, but there may be trips for collaboration and conferences.
