PhD position: pathogenesis of EBV-driven lymphomas KU Leuven in Belgium

This PhD position at KU Leuven focuses on the pathogenesis of EBV-driven lymphomas, situated within the Department of Imaging and Pathology and the Department of Pathology at UZ Leuven. The project is part of an interdisciplinary collaboration with Hematology and the Center for Human Genetics, offering a supportive environment for fundamental and translational research in lymphoma pathogenesis. Research activities will center on tissue-based studies, including histopathology, multiplex immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology, and next generation sequencing, bridging clinical treatment and translational research.

The project aims to understand the pathogenesis of EBV-driven lymphomas in patient cohorts with or without underlying immune deficiency or dysregulation, such as post-transplantation, iatrogenic IDD, HIV, immune senescence, and inborn errors of immunity. You will join an ongoing research effort studying the pathological characteristics of EBV-infected B-cells and the tumor microenvironment, especially in polymorphic and monomorphic lymphoproliferative disorders. The translational approach combines detailed histopathological analysis with genetic and clinical data, advancing knowledge of this complex disease and improving patient management.

As a PhD student, you will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team in pathology, hematology, immunology, and human genetics. The project offers access to biobanked human tumor samples, clinical data, and advanced histopathology and genetics facilities. You will have opportunities to develop research and innovation skills, attend international conferences, and network within the European research landscape. Applicants must have a master's degree in medicine, biomedical science, or a related discipline. A strong CV is preferred, including high honors and/or publications in international journals. Candidates should possess creativity, analytical skills, and a problem-solving mindset, with interest and preferably experience in lymphoma research, histopathology, genetics, and/or bioinformatics. Excellent communication skills in English are required, and Dutch is desirable. The ability to work independently and as part of a team, flexibility, precision, and motivation are essential. Experience with translational research involving human tumor tissue samples and patient data is expected, as well as willingness to contribute to research proposals and supervise master students.

Financing is guaranteed for at least the first 2 years, with encouragement to obtain supplementary personal or project funding thereafter.
