Bladder cancer is a significant global health challenge, ranking as the 10th most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide. Early diagnosis is crucial for improving patient outcomes, yet current diagnostic procedures such as cystoscopy are invasive and carry risks. Training new surgeons in cystoscopy is essential, but conventional methods can expose patients to complications and are often limited in accessibility.
To address these challenges, the University of Bristol, in partnership with the Bristol Robotics Laboratory and North Bristol NHS Trust, is developing advanced smart anatomical simulators. These simulators utilize soft materials, tactile sensors, and robotics to create high-fidelity, sensorised urological training platforms. The project aims to design and develop a physical bladder phantom capable of replicating the forces encountered during cystoscopy, integrating soft tactile sensors and haptic feedback for teleoperation. This innovative approach will provide surgeons with a realistic sense of touch, enhancing training safety and effectiveness beyond current clinical standards.
The successful PhD candidate will join the interdisciplinary 'Dexterous Manipulation and Wearable Robotics' research team, working under the joint supervision of Dr Antonia Tzemanaki, Prof. Andrew Conn, and Mr Joe Philip. The project offers a unique opportunity to gain expertise in soft robotics, haptics, and surgical training technologies, contributing to healthcare innovation with real-world clinical impact.
Applicants should have a strong background in engineering, robotics, computer science, biomedical engineering, or related fields. Experience or interest in robotics, haptics, medical simulation, or human-computer interaction is highly desirable. Good programming skills and familiarity with sensor technologies are advantageous.
