About this position

This PhD position at Radboud University offers an exciting opportunity to join the HFML-FELIX Laboratory, a world-class experimental facility specializing in condensed matter physics. The research focuses on fundamental challenges in ultrafast dynamics and magnetic switching within antiferromagnetic quantum materials. Supported by the ERC Advanced Grant for the INTERPHON project, the successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Andrei Kirilyuk and collaborate with a vibrant team of PhD students, postdocs, and international researchers.

Two main research topics are available: (1) Ultrafast dynamics of phonon-driven magnetic switching, where you will develop novel optical methods to control the magnetic state of materials using infrared and THz radiation, targeting minimal energy dissipation and maximal speed. This project explores the mechanisms of ultrafast angular momentum transfer and the manipulation of crystalline magnetic order, with potential applications in future technologies. (2) Exploring antiferromagnetic quantum materials in and out of equilibrium, focusing on the static and ultrafast response of advanced antiferromagnets. You will use ultra-fast spectroscopy to investigate spin dynamics and THz-range transport, aiming to generate coherent magnonic states and understand non-linear regimes preceding antiferromagnetic switching. This research paves the way for innovations in low-power microelectronics.

The HFML-FELIX Laboratory is renowned for its advanced experimental techniques, including high magnetic fields, free-electron lasers, and a broad array of spectroscopic methods. As a national and international user facility, it provides a stimulating environment with extensive collaboration opportunities. The Faculty of Science at Radboud University is committed to groundbreaking research and excellent education, fostering an inclusive and supportive atmosphere for personal and professional development.

Employment conditions include a 4-year contract (initial 1.5 years, extendable upon positive evaluation), a competitive gross monthly salary (€3,059–€3,881), generous holiday and end-of-year bonuses, flexible working arrangements, extra annual leave, and a comprehensive pension plan. Dual Career Coaching is available to support partners seeking employment in the Netherlands. The position also includes up to 10% teaching responsibilities.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in experimental physics or a related discipline, with a strong interest in condensed matter physics and experimental research. Preferred skills include experience with optical and far-infrared spectroscopy, magnetism, magneto-optics, and low-temperature techniques. Proficiency in English is required.

To apply, submit your application via the Radboud University job portal, addressing your letter to Prof. Andrei Kirilyuk and including all required documents. Applications are reviewed continuously, and interviews will be scheduled with shortlisted candidates. The application deadline is 15 January 2026, but early application is recommended as the vacancy may close sooner if a suitable candidate is found. The preferred start date is March 1, 2026.

For further information, contact Prof. Andrei Kirilyuk at [email protected].
