About this position
The University of Nottingham is offering two fully funded PhD positions in Materials Science and Engineering, focusing on the development of novel coatings for biomedical implants. These positions are part of the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network project, CUSTOM, which centers on customized porous structures and advanced testing for orthopaedic implants. The research topics include the development and optimization of bioactive glass coatings on titanium implants and advanced titanate coatings for porous titanium implants.
The successful candidates will join a vibrant research group led by Professor Ifty Ahmed and collaborate with an extensive European network of academic and industry partners. The project aims to advance the field of biomedical engineering by improving the performance and integration of orthopaedic implants through innovative materials science approaches.
Applicants must hold a master's degree in Materials Engineering or a closely related field. Key requirements include familiarity with bioactive glasses and thermal coating processes (for one position) or experience with producing and characterizing titanate coatings (for the other). Candidates should be early-stage researchers, within four years of starting their research careers, and must demonstrate strong communication and presentation skills. Proficiency in English is essential, and candidates must be willing to undertake international mobility, having not resided or worked in the UK for more than 12 months in the past three years.
These positions are fully funded for three years, with a competitive salary exceeding £36,000 per annum, in accordance with MSCA regulations. Additional allowances may be available based on eligibility. The project start date is September/October 2026, and the application deadline is 16 February 2026.
