About this position
The Institute for Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry at the University of Göttingen is inviting applications for two PhD positions in a research group working on photochemistry for biosystems.
The project is affiliated with Prof. Nadja Simeth and focuses on the design and investigation of photo-peptides for the regulation of enzyme function, in collaboration with groups from biology and biochemistry on the Göttingen Campus. The research spans organic chemistry, biochemistry, chemical biology, peptide synthesis, and photochemical analysis.
Applicants should hold or be close to completing a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field. Strong written and spoken English is required; German communication skills are beneficial. A strong background in organic, bioorganic, or peptide synthesis is expected. Preferred experience includes HPLC-(MS), preparative HPLC, recombinant synthesis, enzyme activity studies, automated solid-phase peptide synthesis, peptide characterization, synthesis of light-sensitive compounds, photochemical experiments, UV-Vis spectroscopy, HPLC, NMR, and biomolecule labelling chemistry.
The positions are funded PhD contracts at E13 TV-L (65%), with 25.87 hours per week, initially limited to three years. The project is funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation.
Deadline: apply by 8 June 2026. The advert states that the positions must be filled by 1 September 2026.
How to apply: submit a single PDF by email to [email protected]. Include a motivation letter naming the advert ID and position, CV, Master certificate or transcript if not yet graduated, publication list if applicable, a summary of past research, a short statement of future research interests, and the names/contact details of two referees.

What's required
Applicants must hold or be about to hold a Master's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related area. Strong written and spoken English skills are required, and good communication skills in German are beneficial. A strong background in organic, bioorganic, or peptide synthesis is expected. For position 1, experience in HPLC-(MS) analysis, preparative HPLC, biochemistry techniques such as recombinant synthesis and enzyme activity studies, and automated solid-phase peptide synthesis and peptide characterization is ideal. For position 2, experience in synthesis and handling of light-sensitive compounds (photocages, PPGs), photochemical experiments and analysis (UV-Vis spectroscopy, HPLC, NMR), and labelling chemistry of biomolecules is ideal.
