About this position

The SWx Lab at the University of Delaware, led by Assistant Professor Shuai Wang, is recruiting highly motivated PhD students for Fall 2026 (or earlier) to work on severe weather and coastal hazard research. The lab is part of the Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences, College of Earth, Ocean and Environment. Two main research areas are available: (1) coastal flooding and hazard impacts along the U.S. East Coast, focusing on storm-driven flooding and impacts from hurricanes and winter storms; and (2) storm-scale dynamics and hurricane structure evolution, investigating the processes that govern hurricane intensity and rainfall distribution. Applicants should have a master's degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, climate science, geography, or a closely related field, though candidates from other scientific or engineering backgrounds with strong quantitative skills are also encouraged to apply. Strong programming skills (Python, Linux, Fortran) are required, and experience with WRF, Delft3D, or ADCIRC is preferred. The positions are fully funded, covering stipend and tuition, with the opportunity to start in Fall 2026 or earlier. The application deadline is December 20, 2025, but applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until positions are filled. To apply, candidates should email Dr. Shuai Wang with a CV, transcripts, and a brief personal statement outlining research interests and experience. The SWx Lab investigates severe weather systems in coastal regions, including global-scale controls on tropical cyclone climatology, storm-scale processes, local and city-scale impacts, and applied hazard and resilience research. The University of Delaware is a historic land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant research university located in Newark, Delaware, offering a vibrant academic environment and excellent geographic location for research.
