About this position

The Max Planck School of Cognition offers a prestigious, fully-funded PhD programme based in Leipzig, Germany, with affiliated universities and research institutions across Germany, London, and Nijmegen. This four-year doctoral programme is designed for outstanding international applicants from diverse academic backgrounds, focusing on the multidisciplinary study of cognition. The programme bridges gaps between disciplines such as artificial intelligence, biology, cognitive neuroscience, genetics, linguistics, mathematics, neurobiology, neuroimaging, neurology, neurophysics, philosophy, physics, psychiatry, and psychology.

Students benefit from a unique structure: the first year emphasizes teaching and laboratory rotations in three different labs, allowing candidates to explore various research groups and define their research interests. Basic courses include e-learning modules and Cognition Academies, which are classroom weeks held every third month in different locations across Germany. The first year concludes with an evaluation, after which students advance to the research phase (years two to four). During the research phase, candidates develop a project proposal with their supervisors, present it to a thesis advisory committee, and, upon approval, begin their doctoral research. Degrees are awarded by the university affiliated with the candidate's supervisor.

The programme features international guest lecturers, intercultural training, and projects with partners in Germany and abroad. Lab rotations across a network of partner institutions provide exposure to cutting-edge research environments. Integrated German language courses are available, and the programme is conducted entirely in English. Tuition fees and semester contributions are waived, and all doctoral studies are fully financed, including living expenses.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field, with at least 60 ECTS or 30 equivalent credits in subjects related to cognition. Solid English proficiency (B2 level) is required. The application period opens in September and closes on 1 December each year. Support for international students includes welcome events, buddy programmes, tutors, and assistance with visa matters.

For more information and to apply, visit the Max Planck School of Cognition website or the DAAD programme page. This opportunity is ideal for motivated students seeking interdisciplinary research training in cognition, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and related fields, within a vibrant international academic network.
