About this position
The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) on Astrophysics offers a prestigious PhD programme in Physics, Astrophysics, and Astrochemistry, jointly awarded by Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU) and Technical University of Munich (TUM). Biannual student symposia, optional transferable skills courses, and career coaching are provided to support professional development.
Each PhD project is supervised by an IMPRS professor or research group leader, with progress monitored by a thesis committee and supported by a mentor programme. The IMPRS fosters international collaborations, intercultural training, and participation in international conferences and workshops, which are encouraged and financed.
Funding is available for all PhD students, who receive a work contract with a gross annual salary of 37,000 - 40,000 EUR, depending on study year, family status, and tax class. Tuition fees are waived, and students pay an enrolment fee of about 150 EUR per semester, which includes a public transport ticket. Accommodation support is provided for students relocating to Munich or Garching.
Applicants must hold an MSc in Physics or Astrophysics (or equivalent) with a Master's thesis of at least 60 ECTS points and a final grade of 'good' (2.5) or better. Exceptional candidates with a top 10% Bachelor's degree may be considered for direct admission, subject to completion of 60 ECTS points from a Master's programme. English proficiency is required (TOEFL ≥ 75 iBT/550 PBT, IELTS ≥ band 6, or equivalent). Applications are accepted online from mid-August to 1 November each year.
