About this position

PhD project: Smart Contracts for Fair and Sustainable Energy Sharing

The University of Southampton is offering a competition-funded Doctor of Philosophy project in the School of Electronics and Computer Science. Based in the United Kingdom, the research will investigate how households, businesses and public organisations can share renewable energy fairly, efficiently and sustainably.

The project combines smart contracts with cooperative game theory, mechanism design, distributed and multiagent artificial intelligence, mathematical optimisation and agent-based simulation. You will study how to identify stable coalitions of energy producers and users, allocate the costs of establishing collaborations, and design dynamic contracts governing the distribution of energy, operating costs and benefits as generation and demand change.

Potential applications include local household electricity sharing, industrial parks using solar generation, and energy collaborations involving council-owned infrastructure such as bus stops and car parks. The research may also examine incentives, subsidies, pricing mechanisms, Power Purchase Agreements and the proposed Complex Site Classes (P441).

Applicants require a 2:1 honours degree. The project is competition funded; detailed stipend and tuition-fee information should be checked through the university's fees and funding resources. The closing date is 31 March 2027.

Applications should be made through the University of Southampton's postgraduate research application process using the project page for instructions.
