About this position
Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) is offering a three-year PhD Research Fellowship in glycomics and sepsis at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Life Sciences and Health in Oslo, Norway.
The project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the glycomics group led by Professor Niclas Karlsson and the SEPSOMICS project group at Oslo University Hospital, Ullevål. The research aims to identify subpopulations of sepsis patients based on glycoprotein profiles and glycomic traits to improve diagnosis and enable precision treatment. The work will use state-of-the-art MS and non-MS glycomics alongside clinical patient information, with a particular focus on altered plasma glycosylation and glycosylation patterns of extracellular vesicles in sepsis.
This PhD is highly relevant for candidates interested in glycobiology, biomarker discovery, translational biomedicine, analytical chemistry, and clinical diagnostics. The project is supported by a strong team in glycomics and extracellular vesicle biochemistry and will leverage a high-quality biobank of Norwegian sepsis patients and controls. The successful candidate may also be eligible to apply for a stipend for extended international research secondment.
Applicants must have a master's degree (120 ECTS) in pharmacy, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biomedicine, or equivalent, with documented biochemical laboratory experience. Strong English skills are required, and admission to a relevant doctoral programme is mandatory. For PhD admission in the Faculty of Health Sciences, the university normally requires grade B or better on the master’s thesis and overall degree; exceptionally, strong candidates with grade C may be considered if they have particularly relevant experience. Advantageous qualifications include experience in biological mass spectrometry, glycomics/glycobiology, sepsis pathogenesis, omics, big data analysis, statistics (such as R), AI/machine learning for health prediction, and proficiency in a Scandinavian language.

Salary follows the Norwegian state employee pay scale, with a stated annual salary of 532,200 NOK.
