About this position

The Instituto de Engenharia Mecânica (IDMEC) in Lisbon, Portugal, is inviting applications for a PhD Research Studentship focused on the development and implementation of a functional electrical stimulation system for gait. This project is part of the LAETA/IDMEC initiative, funded by national resources through FCT.IP, and aims to advance the integration of electronic components and control laws for rehabilitation engineering.

The successful candidate will work under the scientific supervision of Professor Jorge Martins at IDMEC, engaging in research that bridges mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, and robotics. The workplan centers on designing and implementing electronic systems and control strategies to support gait rehabilitation, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in systems and control.

The studentship provides a monthly maintenance allowance of €1309.64, in accordance with FCT guidelines, for an initial period of 6 months, with the possibility of renewal up to a total of 12 months. The position is open to candidates holding a Master's degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD program or commit to enrolling prior to the start of the fellowship. Degrees obtained abroad must be formally recognized by a Portuguese institution, and candidates are required to present the relevant certificate upon signing the contract.

Selection will be based primarily on curriculum evaluation (70%), with interviews conducted if necessary (30%). The selection jury includes Professor João Sousa (President), Professor Jorge Martins, and Professor Rui Coelho. All applicants will be notified of the results by email, and have the right to submit a formal rebuttal within 10 working days of notification.

To apply, candidates must submit a Curriculum Vitae, academic degree certificate, proof of PhD enrollment, and a motivation letter. Applications should be sent via email to [email protected], referencing the notice. The application window is open from December 22, 2025, to January 7, 2026, with the fellowship expected to start in February 2026.

For further details, visit the IDMEC job openings page or consult the official position link. This opportunity is ideal for motivated researchers interested in advancing rehabilitation technologies and control systems within a dynamic research environment in Portugal.
