PhD Research Studentship in Functional Electrical Stimulation Systems for Gait at IDMEC Instituto de Engenharia Mecânica in Portugal

The Instituto de Engenharia Mecânica (IDMEC) in Lisbon, Portugal, is inviting applications for a PhD Research Studentship focused on the development and implementation of a functional electrical stimulation system for gait. This project is part of the LAETA/IDMEC initiative, funded by national resources through FCT.IP, and aims to advance the integration of electronic components and control laws for rehabilitation engineering.

The successful candidate will work under the scientific supervision of Professor Jorge Martins at IDMEC, engaging in research that bridges mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, and robotics. The studentship provides a monthly maintenance allowance of €1309.64, in accordance with FCT guidelines, for an initial period of 6 months, with the possibility of renewal up to a total of 12 months. The position is open to candidates holding a Master's degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD program or commit to enrolling prior to the start of the fellowship. Degrees obtained abroad must be formally recognized by a Portuguese institution, and candidates are required to present the relevant certificate upon signing the contract.

Selection will be based primarily on curriculum evaluation (70%), with interviews conducted if necessary (30%). The selection jury includes Professor João Sousa (President), Professor Jorge Martins, and Professor Rui Coelho.
