About this position

Monash University Indonesia is offering a fully-funded PhD scholarship focused on Digital Transformation and Everyday Life in Indonesia. This opportunity is part of an international research collaboration led by Arran Ridley, Dyah Pitaloka, and Verity Trott, exploring how digital infrastructures and data-driven technologies shape work, creativity, care, and resilience across Indonesia and the Global South.

The successful candidate will develop an independent thesis within this broad agenda, with possible research areas including digital inclusion and exclusion in Indonesian cities, data infrastructures and platform/creative labour, community responses to Indonesia's One Data (Satu Data) policy, and local data practices among entrepreneurs, gig workers, and creative communities. The project is ideal for those interested in media and communication, sociology, anthropology, human geography, digital humanities, design research, and related social sciences.

The scholarship includes a living allowance of AUD $11,500 per annum (paid in IDR), full tuition fee coverage, and a fieldwork bursary. Additional support is provided for conferences, travel, and research activities. The candidate will benefit from expert supervision by leading scholars from Australia and Indonesia, as well as opportunities for co-authored publications and international collaboration.

Applicants must have an excellent academic record, holding an Honours or Master's degree with first-class/H1 in a relevant field. It is essential to discuss your research proposal with Arran Ridley before submitting an Expression of Interest. The application deadline is 18 January 2026. For more information, refer to the LinkedIn post or contact the lead supervisor directly.
