About this position

PhD stipend opportunity at Aalborg University (Copenhagen Campus), Department of Electronic Systems, in the AI:HARDWARE Lab under the broader AI:X initiative.

The project focuses on secure embedded AI, AI security, trustworthy machine learning, and cyber-physical energy systems such as EV chargers and power grids. The research aims to develop lightweight AI methods that can run on constrained hardware and detect unsafe, manipulated, or attacked conditions in real time.

Typical work includes anomaly and attack detection, fault/attack propagation modeling, secure ML decision-making, lightweight models for embedded/edge devices, and implementation/testing on hardware prototypes. The position is closely connected to power electronics and secure-by-design embedded systems.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in a relevant area such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or Embedded Systems / Edge Computing. Strong Python and ML framework experience (PyTorch/TensorFlow) is helpful, and interest in embedded systems, real-time computing, FPGA, TinyML, or hardware-software co-design is a plus. Strong ML candidates without hardware experience are encouraged to apply.

The position is full-time for 3 years and starts on 15 September 2026 or soon after. Deadline: 11 August 2026. Standard PhD expectations include 30 ECTS coursework, teaching/knowledge sharing, and an external research stay abroad (preferably 3–6 months).

Apply through Aalborg University’s recruitment system with a motivation letter, CV, diplomas/grades, and other relevant documents.
