About this position

This PhD project focuses on chromatin-associated long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and their role in regulating transcription and seed dormancy in plants. The advertised research is centered on the lncRNA MUSHER and its interaction with key dormancy and ABA-signalling regulators, including DOG1 and PIR1. The project builds on recent findings suggesting that non-coding RNAs can coordinate seed behaviour by influencing transcript termination, chromatin activation, and RNA retention at chromatin.

The successful candidate will investigate how MUSHER coordinates seed dormancy in response to environmental cues and how related lncRNAs are retained in the nucleus and anchored to chromatin. The work is expected to combine physiological, genetic, and molecular approaches with CRISPR mutagenesis, transcriptomics, chromatin immunoprecipitation, ChIP-seq, spatial genomics, and RNA-protein interaction assays. The broader aim is to clarify the molecular logic of lncRNA-mediated gene regulation in plants and the contribution of 3' end transcript modifications to RNA localisation and function.

The position is based at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. It is a full-time temporary PhD position in the Doctoral School, with a planned start date of 1 October 2026 and the doctoral school beginning on 1 March 2027.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold, or be close to obtaining before the programme starts, a Master of Science, Master of Engineering, medical degree, or equivalent in exact sciences, natural sciences, medical sciences, or related disciplines. Experience in seed biology or plant molecular biology is preferred, and Python coding would be an advantage. Excellent English is required.

Preferably, candidates should have experience in seed biology and/or plant molecular biology, as well as Python coding. English at excellent level is required.
