About this position

Linköping University invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in AI Security, focusing on the critical topic of “Memory Poisoning in LLM Agents: Foundations, Attacks, and Defenses.” This research addresses the emerging security risks in large language model (LLM) agents, which are increasingly deployed in high-impact domains such as healthcare, finance, cybersecurity, and autonomous vehicles. The project aims to develop theoretical foundations and practical defenses against memory poisoning attacks that threaten the reliability and security of LLM agents.

The successful candidate will join the Division for Communication Systems (KS) at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY), working within a dynamic research team led by Assistant Professor Khac-Hoang Ngo (Linköping University) and Professor Erik G Larsson. The team collaborates with Chalmers University of Technology and Recorded Future, offering opportunities for research visits and interdisciplinary engagement. The division is renowned for its research in communications engineering, statistical signal processing, network science, and decentralized machine learning.

This position is funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR) and offers a competitive salary determined by local agreements. The employment is full-time for four years, with possible extension up to five years depending on teaching and departmental duties. The starting date is flexible but must be no later than January 1, 2027. The university is recognized as a global leader in AI research and provides a vibrant academic environment, having been awarded “Student City of the Year” in Sweden three times.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Applied Mathematics (minimum 240 credits, with at least 60 credits in advanced courses in these fields), or possess equivalent knowledge. Strong mathematical maturity, programming skills, and excellent English communication abilities are required. Candidates should be independent, goal-oriented, and effective collaborators with strong problem-solving skills. The degree requirement must be fulfilled by the time of employment contract signing.

Application: Apply online via the Linköping University vacancies portal by April 20, 2026. Applications received after this date will not be considered. For further information, contact Assistant Professor Khac-Hoang Ngo or Professor Erik G Larsson. Additional details about the division and research environment can be found on the university website.

Linköping University values diversity and equal opportunities, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds. Background screening may be conducted before employment decisions are finalized.
