About this position
PhD opening at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg, Germany for a project on engineering crystallization and precipitation processes for biopharmaceuticals.
The new Phase Transition Engineering group (Dr. Leif-Thore Deck) studies how solids and other condensed phases form from fluids, from nucleation and crystal growth to protein aggregation and phase separation. The project focuses on pharmaceutically relevant biomolecules such as peptides and proteins, with an emphasis on process design, process analytics, and optimization.
You will design, build, and automate a liter-scale precipitation platform, integrate downstream steps such as centrifugation, filtration, and re-dissolution, and use image-based online monitoring to track particle size distribution in real time. The work connects experimental process engineering with modeling and droplet microfluidics, bridging scales from nanoliter droplets to liters.
Required background: a Master's degree or equivalent in chemical, bio- or process engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related field, with above-average grades. The post asks for hands-on experimental ability, interest in building automated setups, strong communication and teamwork, and very good English; basic German is a plus. Experience with process design/control, PAT, Python, or biomolecule handling is beneficial.
Funding: 4-year contract with salary according to TVöD (Bund), E13, 75%, plus support for international conference attendance.
Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis until the position is filled. Apply through the online application portal and upload a motivation letter, CV, certificates, and reference letters.
