About this position
University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), Institute of Medical Biometry and Epidemiology, is recruiting a PhD Student (all genders) for the EU-funded AF-B-STEP project.
The project focuses on epidemiology, cardiovascular research, atrial fibrillation, and the effects of atrial fibrillation burden on cardiovascular events. The successful candidate will work on systematic literature review, simulation studies, and the development and application of modern causal inference methods for observational data with time-varying exposures and confounders.
This is a research-intensive position embedded in an interdisciplinary team spanning epidemiology, biometry, clinical cardiology, and industry partners. The role also offers participation in teaching at the institute by arrangement and access to high-quality clinical registry and insurance data.
Eligibility highlights: completed master’s degree or equivalent in epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, public health, mathematics, or a related field; strong statistical and epidemiological training; good programming skills in R or STATA; very good English; teamwork and communication skills; independent and careful working style. Experience in causal inference is desirable but not mandatory.
Funding and contract: the post is a paid, fixed-term qualification position at 100% working time for three years under TVöD/VKA, with possible extension. It is explicitly designed as a qualification post with the opportunity to pursue a PhD in the UKE PhD program for non-medical researchers.
Deadline: 30 April 2026. Apply through the UKE careers portal using the online application link.
