About this position
Empa in Switzerland is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for work on thin films, deposition processes, materials informatics, artificial intelligence, and autonomous experiments.
The position is based in the Coating Technologies Group in Empa’s Laboratory for Surface Science & Coating Technologies. The research aims to accelerate thin-film and process development for emerging applications such as ferroelectric memory, photonic integrated circuits, and next-generation telecommunications.
Research activities include physical vapor deposition (PVD), synchronized HiPIMS, in-depth materials characterization, surface analysis, high-throughput experimental workflows, closed-loop optimization, AI/ML-based data analysis and modelling, and development of hardware/software concepts for automated and self-driving experiments.
The postdoctoral project is especially focused on advanced thin films such as piezoelectric and ferroelectric nitrides, informed by in-situ surface and interface analysis. The lab environment includes unique infrastructure for materials and device characterization and a self-driving thin-film laboratory under development with sputter deposition and in-situ techniques such as RHEED, AES, and XPS.
Applicants should have a PhD in physics, materials science, chemistry, electrical engineering, or a related discipline. Strong experience in UHV, thin-film technology, PVD, and surface science is expected. Python skills, excellent English, a strong publication record, and interest in lab automation and agentic AI are important. Experience with piezoelectric/ferroelectric nitrides and pulsed sputtering is an advantage.
The contract is full-time, initially for two years, with a possibility of extension and a long-term perspective. The position is located in Switzerland and is available from 1 December 2026 or later by agreement. Applications must be submitted online via the job portal with a motivation letter, CV, certificates, diplomas, and two reference contacts.
