About this position
PhD opportunity in Medical Science at Umeå University, Sweden
The Department of Odontology at Umeå University is recruiting a PhD student for the project Oral Microbiome Eco-Mechanics—Host Genetics and Microbial Ecology. The project sits within the national doctoral school BioLabX and explores how human genetic variation shapes the oral microbiome, with a focus on host genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, microbiome science, sequencing, and bioinformatics.
The research is interdisciplinary and may include genetic and molecular analyses (including TaqMan-based assays and copy-number variation analysis), Nanopore-based sequencing, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, metagenomic sequencing, integration of microbiome and clinical data, microbial adhesion and biofilm formation experiments, and analysis of carbohydrates, proteins, and extracellular vesicles involved in host–microbe interactions.
Eligibility requires a degree in biomedical laboratory science plus a complementary master’s degree, or equivalent knowledge gained through education or professional experience. Applicants must also have relevant higher education for the doctoral area and strong written and spoken English. Experience in microbiota/microbiome analysis, sequencing technologies, PCR/TaqMan assays, molecular and microbiological lab methods, basic programming or bioinformatics, and clinical/biomedical data analysis is considered advantageous.
This is a full-time PhD position for four years, with salary according to Umeå University’s PhD salary scale. The successful candidate will join the BioLabX network and also participate in teaching and doctoral education activities at the Department of Odontology and the Faculty of Medicine.
Apply via the Varbi recruitment system by 2026-10-15. The application must be in English and include a personal letter, CV, degree documentation, theses/publications, other relevant qualifications, and contact details for two referees.
