About this position
Postdoctoral position in Microbiology at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, in the Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine / Institute of Medicine.
The project focuses on the gut microbiota, especially Faecalibacterium and related members of Lachnospiraceae and Oscillospiraceae, with an emphasis on diet-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions, microbial metabolism, and links to metabolic diseases.
The work combines anaerobic cultivation, isolation of human gut bacteria, comparative genomics, phylogenetic analysis, functional genome annotation, metabolomics, and experimental model systems. The successful candidate will analyze bacterial species, strains, and genomes, and investigate how strain-level variation shapes microbial function and host metabolism.
Eligibility: a doctoral degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent foreign degree) is required before the employment decision is made. Recent PhD graduates are preferred, and applicants with strong experience in anaerobic microbiology, genome-based bacterial characterization, and R-based data analysis are especially encouraged.
Required experience: YCFA medium and other anaerobic culture media, Coy chambers or equivalent anaerobic systems, genome-based phylogenetic identification, ANI, dDDH, Prokka, COGs/EggNOG, programming/statistical analysis in R, and excellent English.
Merits: experience with Lachnospiraceae/Oscillospiraceae, butyrate-producing or fibre-degrading bacteria, faecal cultures from human samples, dietary substrate metabolism, phenotypic characterization methods, Faecalibacterium, and international research experience.
Employment: fixed-term postdoc for 36 months, 100% employment. Start date: 2026-11-01 or by agreement. Salary is individually set.
Application deadline: 2026-09-07. Apply via the University of Gothenburg recruitment portal and attach a PhD certificate (or provide it later if not yet issued) plus a cover letter describing relevant experience.
Funding details
Fixed-term employment for 36 months at 100% extent. Salary is set individually. No stipend or tuition funding is mentioned.
What's required
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject or an equivalent foreign degree, with the degree completed before the employment decision is made. Preference is given to candidates who completed the degree within the last three years, unless special grounds apply. Required experience includes preparation and optimization of culture media for strictly anaerobic human gut bacteria (including YCFA fatty acid medium), cultivation and isolation under anaerobic conditions using Coy chambers or equivalent systems, genome-based phylogenetic identification and functional characterization of bacterial species and strains, analyses using tools such as Protologger, ANI, dDDH, Prokka, and COGs/EggNOG, programming and statistical analysis in R, and excellent written and spoken English. Meritorious experience includes work with Lachnospiraceae and Oscillospiraceae, butyrate-producing or fibre-degrading bacteria, faecal cultures from human samples, dietary substrate metabolism, API kits or other phenotypic methods, Faecalibacterium and related anaerobes, and international research experience.
How to apply
Apply through the University of Gothenburg recruitment portal using the Apply button on the vacancy page. Submit a complete application by the deadline and attach your PhD certificate, or provide it no later than the employment decision date if it has not yet been issued. Include a cover letter describing your experience in anaerobic cultivation, isolation and characterization of human gut bacteria, and bioinformatic/genome-based analysis.
