About this position
PhD project in plant demography at Uppsala University within the Department of Ecology and Genetics and the Evolutionary Biology Centre. The position sits in an international research environment focused on ecological and evolutionary processes across levels of biological organization, with access to national and local research infrastructure, including supercomputing resources, molecular technologies, sequencing platforms, controlled environmental chambers, greenhouses, and a molecular lab.
The doctoral project will investigate plant population ecology with a particular emphasis on how demographic parameters such as survival and reproduction change with plant ageing, and how environmental factors shape these vital rates, population dynamics, and distribution patterns. The work is framed around fundamental ecological questions while also aiming to improve understanding of how environmental change may affect populations and communities.
The project is hosted by the research program in Plant Ecology and Evolution. It combines independent field work with mathematical modelling and is linked to ongoing long-term studies of Actaea spicata, Pulsatilla vulgaris subsp. gotlandica, and orchids in the genera Dactylorhiza and Gymnadenia. The exact balance of field and modelling work will depend on the selected candidate’s interests and the development of the project.
The main supervisor is Johan Dahlgren. Doctoral students in the department may also take part in teaching and training activities, and can join the PhD school for networking with doctoral students across the biology departments at Uppsala University.

What's required
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, applicants must hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in biology with focus on ecology or a related field, or have completed at least 240 higher education credits with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. The candidate should have a valid international driver’s license, a good understanding of central ecological concepts, experience with statistical analysis and population modelling especially in R, be highly motivated and curious, thrive in a collaborative environment, be able to take responsibility for independent tasks and projects, and have strong spoken and written English. Experience with ecological field work, plant species identification, and quantitative skills are meriting. Personal qualities valued include motivation, independence, problem-solving analytical skills, initiative, creativity, and ability to cooperate and collaborate with others.
