PhD Student / Junior Researcher in Microeconomics / Applied Economics (Production and Resource Economics) Technical University of Munich in Germany

The Chair Group of Production and Resource Economics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) School of Management and School of Life Sciences invites applications for a PhD Student / Junior Researcher position in Microeconomics / Applied Economics. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in empirical research at the intersection of economics, agriculture, and environmental policy. The initial appointment is for two years, with the possibility of extension, and is funded according to the German State Regulated Public Salary Scale (TV-L E13 2/3).

The successful candidate will engage in high-impact research in areas such as natural resources and environment, digitalisation, AI and smart technologies in the livestock sectors, climate change and policy, agricultural, food and environmental policy impact analysis, and production efficiency and food markets. The position offers involvement in nationally and internationally funded projects, including EU Horizon projects like Smart4Welfare and URSOILL. The research aims to produce internationally competitive results and peer-reviewed publications, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in applied economics and related fields.

Supervision will be provided by senior academic staff, including Professor Johannes Sauer, Maria Vrachioli, Ph.D., and Dr. Fabian Frick. The role may also involve teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, participation in funding acquisition, and opportunities for global outreach. International networking and collaborations are strongly encouraged, with potential for research connections in South America, Asia, or Africa. The PhD process includes integration into TUM’s School of Life Sciences or School of Management and participation in graduate school training programs.

Applicants should hold an excellent or very-good university degree in economics, business studies, agricultural sciences with an economics focus, or a related discipline. Strong analytical and methodological skills, particularly in quantitative data analysis (econometrics, statistics, machine learning), are essential. Candidates must demonstrate high motivation, independence, teamwork, and excellent English communication skills, with a willingness to acquire working knowledge of German.
