About this position

Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences (Department of Ultrafast Dynamics, Prof. Dr. Claus Ropers and Dr. Armin Feist) is recruiting two fully funded PhD Student Positions (f/m/x) in electron-light interaction in silicon photonic nanostructures in Göttingen, Germany.

The project sits at the intersection of physics, quantum photonics, electron microscopy, nanotechnology, and materials science. Students will study the interaction of free electrons with silicon nanostructures, investigate quantum effects, and work on ambitious experimental research using electron microscopes and silicon photonic structures. Two project variants are available: one on enhancing electron-light interactions in tailored nanostructures with flexible geometries and variable beam energies, and another on hybrid devices coupling local quantum states to electron beams.

The positions are part of the EU-funded HORIZON-MSCA-2025-DN QUEST Doctoral Network (Quantum Electrodynamics with Silicon Nanotechnology), which includes training activities, collaboration with partner institutions, conferences, schools, and workshops. The PhD candidates will also participate in the GAUSS PhD program at the University of Göttingen, including PhD courses and teaching assistant duties.

Funding: fully funded MSCA Doctoral Candidate positions for 36 months, with salary according to MSCA regulations and a living allowance, mobility allowance, and family allowance if applicable.

Eligibility: Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, or engineering; excellent academic record; preferably experience in electron microscopy, nano-optics, integrated photonics, or quantum optics; strong English; and compliance with MSCA mobility rules (no more than 12 months in Germany during the previous 3 years, unless exempt). Candidates must be in the first five years of their research career and not already hold a PhD.

Application deadline: 1 November 2026. Apply by email with a single PDF containing CV, motivation letter, degree proof, thesis if available, references, and transcripts. One application covers both projects; indicate your preference if relevant.

Funding details

Fully funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Candidate positions under the Horizon Europe Doctoral Network QUEST. Salary follows MSCA regulations and includes a living allowance, mobility allowance, and family allowance if applicable. Funding duration is 36 months for each position.

What's required

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (MSc or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, or engineering, with an excellent academic record and preferably demonstrated scientific achievements. Desired experience includes electron microscopy, nano-optics, integrated photonics, or quantum optics from the Master’s thesis or equivalent. Candidates must meet Marie Skłodowska-Curie mobility and eligibility rules: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before recruitment, must be in the first five years of their research career, and must not already hold a doctoral degree. Strong English communication skills, teamwork, reliability, self-drive, and curiosity are emphasized.

How to apply

Submit one application for both projects by email as a single PDF. Include a CV, motivation letter, copy of the Master’s degree or proof of expected completion, Master thesis if available, contact details for at least two references, and all academic transcripts. Indicate your project preference in the application if you have one.
