About this position

[Funded through the supervisor’s Royal Society grant; covers tuition fees and provides a standard stipend.]

PhD Studentship in 2D Material Spintronics Logic and Memory Device at the University of Oxford, within the MIND Research Group in the Department of Physics.

This Royal Society-funded project is supervised by Dr Safeer Chenattukuzhiyil and focuses on next-generation computing hardware based on two-dimensional van der Waals materials. The research aims to move beyond the limits of conventional silicon electronics by exploiting spin-dependent transport for advanced device concepts.

The project will investigate how atomically thin materials can be assembled into tailored structures to engineer electronic and spintronic properties. The goal is to develop nanoscale devices for information storage, logic processing, and neuromorphic communication, with potential applications in ultrafast, low-energy classical computing and brain-inspired hardware.

The position is a PhD studentship and includes tuition fees plus a standard stipend. It is based in the MIND Research Group, part of the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford.

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a strong undergraduate or master’s degree in physics, materials science, or a closely related discipline. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, interested in experimental condensed matter physics, nanotechnology, spintronics, and/or two-dimensional materials, and able to work independently as well as in a collaborative team. Experience with nanofabrication, electrical measurements, magnetism, device physics, or related techniques is helpful but not required.

The project is expected to start in October 2027. The application portal is expected to open by the end of October 2026, and the deadline is 6 January 2027. Interested candidates should first check eligibility for the University of Oxford Physics DPhil programme and review the application procedure on the group’s join page.
