This PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia offers an exciting opportunity to advance the field of computational biology through the development of AI-based models for predicting splice site selection. The project is rooted in the central dogma of molecular biology, focusing on the mechanisms by which the spliceosome recognises exon–intron boundaries and how disruptions in this process contribute to human diseases such as cancer and inherited genetic disorders.

Building on the Wu group’s expertise in deep learning and genomic data analysis, the research will integrate large language models and deep learning techniques to analyse genomic sequences and RNA sequencing data from both Caenorhabditis elegans and human cells. The collaborative team includes Dr Alper Akay (UEA) and Professor Yiliang Ding (JIC), ensuring a multidisciplinary approach that bridges computational and biological sciences.

The School of Computing Sciences at UEA provides a vibrant research environment, with collaborations spanning multinational companies and research institutes within the Norwich Research Park. The school is also a member of the Turing University Network, supporting world-class research and skill development in AI and data science.

Funding for this studentship includes ‘Home’ tuition fees, a tax-free maintenance stipend of £20,408 per year for up to three years, and £2,000 annually to support research training activities. The project is in competition for a funded studentship, and the successful candidate will also contribute to laboratory support activities for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in AI, Data Science, Computing Sciences, and Cyber Security.

Applicants should have at least a 2:1 bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Biology, or a related discipline. Prior biological knowledge is not required, as comprehensive training will be provided within a collaborative research environment. The mode of study is full-time, with a start date of 1 October 2026.
