About this position

This PhD project at the University of East Anglia investigates the circulation of the Arctic Ocean in the context of rapid climate change. The Arctic region is experiencing significant environmental shifts, including the Atlantification of the Arctic Ocean due to increased intrusion of warm, saline Atlantic Water and a decline in sea ice extent. These changes are altering ocean circulation, freshwater and heat storage, and upper ocean mixing processes, with global climate implications.

The research will utilize the Arctic and Subpolar Gyre State Estimate (ASTE) and high-resolution ocean modelling to examine the pathways and fate of Atlantic Water entering the Arctic, analyze the effects of sea ice loss on ocean-atmosphere-ice exchanges, and assess the impact of cyclone activity and reduced sea ice on internal wave generation and vertical mixing. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of ocean modellers and polar climate scientists at UEA and collaborate with Cefas, gaining comprehensive training in polar oceanography, air-sea interaction, and advanced modelling techniques.

Applicants should have a strong scientific background, self-motivation, and a degree in physics, mathematics, oceanography, meteorology, or a related science, with good computing and numerical skills.

The position is fully funded for eligible UK and international students, covering tuition, a maintenance stipend (£20,780 p.a. for 2025/26), and a research training and support grant. International students may have the fee difference waived, but relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not covered. The program starts on 1 October 2026, and candidates must meet the English language requirement (IELTS 6.5 overall, 6 in each category).
