About this position
This fully funded PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia is hosted within the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership and focuses on chemical biology approaches to tackling antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
The project, led by Dr Andrew Beekman and Dr Susan Schlimpert, aims to inhibit bacterial growth by disrupting essential protein-protein interactions required for cell division. Using Mycobacteria smegmatis as a model for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the student will design, synthesise, and test compounds and peptides that can block the formation of protein complexes involved in bacterial proliferation.
This is an interdisciplinary project spanning chemical biology, microbiology, medicinal chemistry, peptide design, protein biochemistry, and computational design. Training will include cutting-edge methods for peptide synthesis, assessment of protein binding, and testing inhibitory activity in bacteria. The student will work across the School of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Pharmacology and The John Innes Centre, in a collaborative research environment with strong support for scientific and professional development.
The studentship is 4 years in duration and includes tuition fees, a living stipend at the 2026/27 rate of £21,805, and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year. NRPDTP students also complete a three-month professional internship placement (PIPS) during the doctorate, with support from the programme’s internship team.
Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, at least a first-class, 2(i) or equivalent Honours degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or a related discipline. English language evidence is required, with IELTS 6.5 overall and 6.0 in each category for the Faculty of Science equivalent standard.
The application deadline is 30 November 2026. Shortlisted candidates are expected to be interviewed on 2, 3, and 4 February 2027. Applicants must use the bespoke NRPDTP Personal Statement and Research Statement templates as part of the application process.
