About this position

[Full course fees at Home rate plus stipend of at least £20,780 per annum for 3.5 years (UKRI standard rate).]

This fully funded DPhil (PhD) studentship in Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Oxford offers an exciting opportunity to join Professor Adam Kirrander’s research group in the Department of Chemistry. The project focuses on quantum tomography of electronic states, aiming to develop new theoretical and computational methods to achieve a more complete understanding of electron wavefunctions in atoms and molecules. Research in the Kirrander group explores advanced light-matter interactions through theory and simulations, with the goal of measuring and controlling quantum dynamics.

The successful candidate will investigate how combining multiple and novel measurement techniques can enhance quantum tomography, ultimately improving electronic structure theory and enabling new ultrafast imaging methods. These tools will contribute to a deeper understanding of the interplay between nuclear and electronic motions in photoexcited dynamics, paving the way for the engineering of molecules with custom properties for applications such as energy harvesting and photocatalysis.

The studentship covers full course fees at the Home rate and provides a stipend of at least £20,780 per annum for 3.5 years, in line with UKRI funding standards. The position is based in the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory (PTCL) at Oxford, a leading centre for research in quantum chemistry and molecular physics. The Kirrander group is highly collaborative, working closely with partners in the UK and internationally, and is committed to promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion.

Applicants should have a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to research, independent learning skills, and a positive, collaborative attitude. The ability to work across disciplinary boundaries and to engage with both theoretical and experimental aspects of the research is highly valued.

To apply, submit a formal application for the DPhil in Chemistry via the Oxford online application system, quoting 'AK/Chem/2026' under ‘Departmental Studentship Applications’. The application deadline is 12.00 noon UK time on Thursday 8th January 2026. For further information about the research group, visit the Kirrander group web page and Professor Kirrander’s staff profile. For queries regarding the application process, contact [email protected].

This studentship is ideal for candidates interested in quantum chemistry, theoretical physics, and computational science, who wish to contribute to cutting-edge research in electronic structure and quantum dynamics at one of the world’s leading universities.
